Docwra, Henry

Docwra, Henry (d. 1631), leader of the Lough Foyle expedition of 1600–3 during the Nine Years War. On May 1600 he landed unimpeded with 4,000 men and began the fortification of Derry. He found a formidable ally in Niall Garbh O'Donnell and gradually widened his control until in June 1602 he was able to effect a rendezvous with Mountjoy in mid‐Tyrone and participate in the spoliation of the country which finally brought O'Neill to submission. Docwra subsequently wrote a ‘narration’ to indicate that he and his erstwhile allies had been ill‐rewarded for their services at Lough Foyle.
