Diarmait mac Cerbaill

Diarmait mac Cerbaill was the ancestor of the two leading dynasties of the southern
Uí Néill. Their tradition recorded in the
annals made him
high king from 544 until his defeat by the northern Uí Néill and his death in 565; he was regarded as the last to celebrate the pagan inauguration known as
Feis Temro. Since the southern Uí Néill dynasties had barely emerged at this date, we should see this as part of their origin‐legend. By the time
Adomnán wrote his Life of St
Colum Cille, however, Diarmait had already gained his leading place in their traditions; Adomnán sought to Christianize this, describing him as ‘ordained by God's will as king of all Ireland’. He also describes Diarmait's killing on Lough Neagh, which became the subject of a popular tale. He was buried at Connor in enemy territory, but his head was taken back to Clonmacnoise.
