Davey, J. E. (1890–1960). A sometime fellow of King's College, Cambridge, he accepted a professorship in the Presbyterian College, Belfast, in 1916. In 1927 his lectures and publications led to his trial by the General Assembly on a charge of heresy, of which he was overwhelmingly acquitted. His disappointed accusers formed the Irish Evangelical church and Ian Paisley (see free presbyterian church of ulster) uses his acquittal as evidence of the apostasy of Irish Presbyterianism.
