Crommellin, Samuel Louis

Crommellin, Samuel Louis (1652–1727). A prominent member of the colony of Huguenot refugees at Lisburn, Co. Antrim, Crommellin was commissioned by government to form a royal corporation for the manufacture of linen. In 1705 he published An Essay on Linen Manufacture in Ireland. He was at one time regarded as the founder of the Irish linen industry, but modern accounts see his venture as only part of a broader development taking place at this time in response to the new opportunities created by the removal of duties on Irish linen exports to Britain.
