Crawford, Frederick Hugh

Crawford, Frederick Hugh (1861–1952), one of the most influential militant unionists of the home rule era. As a member of Lord Ranfurly's Ulster Loyalist Union in 1893, Crawford imported small quantities of weapons from England. He created a society, ‘Young Ulster’, modelled on continental nationalist sporting clubs, and organized drilling and the manufacture of ammunition. A Boer War veteran, he brought his military experience to the unionist movement. He was a key influence behind the creation in November 1910 of a secret subcommittee of the Ulster Unionist Council designed to consider the importation of weapons, and in 1914 organized the Larne gun‐running. In 1920–1 he helped to revive the Ulster Volunteer Force.
