Cranfield Commission

Cranfield Commission (1622), sent to Ireland by Lionel Cranfield, lord treasurer of England, when its government was close to bankruptcy and allegations of corruption widespread. Staffed by English and Irish experts, it revealed slow progress in the plantations, faulty accounting procedures in the exchequer, neglect of the established church, and a hugely inadequate judiciary. Although some fiscal retrenchment and judicial change eventuated, serious reform had to await Wentworth's arrival ten years later.
