Corkery, Daniel (1878–1964), writer and cultural nationalist. Corkery joined the
Gaelic League as a young schoolteacher, contributed to D. P.
Moran's
Leader 1901–20, and with Terence
MacSwiney founded the Cork Dramatic Society. He was primarily a cultural nationalist until the Easter rising (see
rising of 1916). Angered by Republican defeat in the
Civil War and the subsequent reaction against nationalist idealism, he restated his ideals in
The Hidden Ireland (1924) and
Synge and Anglo‐Irish Literature (1931). His definition of Irishness as rural, nationalist, and Catholic alienated his protégés
O'Faolain and Frank O'Connor. His reputation as the voice of de
Valeran orthodoxy overshadows his role as cultural catalyst.
