Communist Party. The first Communist Party of Ireland was formed in October 1921, when members of the Socialist Party of Ireland, formed in 1917 and led by Roddy Connolly (son of James
Connolly), affiliated to the third
International. It dissolved in 1924, when James
Larkin's Irish Workers' League took over both the membership and the role of Comintern affiliate. Re‐established in 1933, it dissolved following the Nazi invasion of Russia in 1941. It was revived in 1948 as the Irish Workers' League, and once again became the Communist Party of Ireland in 1970. In none of these guises has it attracted significant electoral or popular support.
