Cogadh Gaedhel re Gallaibh

Cogadh Gaedhel re Gallaibh is a Middle Irish text which describes the various Viking invasions of Ireland in the 9th and 10th centuries and more especially the resistance to them provided by the Dál Cais under the leadership of Mathgamain mac Cennétig and of his brother Brian Bóruma (Boru), culminating in the victory of Brian's forces at the battle of Clontarf. Though based in part on annalistic and other sources, the text is not in fact contemporary with any of the events it relates, but was written at the behest of Brian Bóruma's great‐grandson Muirchertach Ua Briain, at the height of that king's power in the early years of the 12th century. Hence, the Cogadh is in effect a skilful piece of Uí Briain dynastic political propaganda.
