Clann Colmáin

Clann Colmáin were one of two major southern Uí Néill dynasties, based in Mide (centred on modern Co. Westmeath). Their eponym, Colmán Már, was reputedly a great‐great‐grandson of Niall Noígiallach. An early centre of Clann Colmáin power is said to have been Loch Drethin (north of Mullingar), but their 10th‐ and 11th‐century descendants, the Uí Máelsechlainn, were located at Lough Ennell. The Clann Colmáin provided a number of 8th‐ and 9th‐century kings of Tara (see high kingship). They subsequently conquered lands of the Síl nÁedo Sláine in Meath, but their power declined after Máel Sechnaill mac Domnaill (d. 1022) submitted to Brian Bóruma.
