Cenél Conaill

Cenél Conaill were a dynasty within the Uí Néill, based in modern Co. Donegal. Often at odds with their Cenél nEógain cousins to the east, their other major enemy was the northern Connachta. Prior to 765, a number of their kings were kings of Tara (see high kingship), most notably Domnall mac Áedo (fl. 628–42), who defeated a Cruthin‐led alliance at Mag Rath (Moira, Co. Down) in 637, and Loingsech mac Óengusso (fl. 696–703). In alliance with his kinsman Adomnán, Loingsech promulgated Cáin Adomnáin in 697 in favour of Iona, the church founded by another member of the dynasty, Colum Cille.
