Carew, Sir George (1555–1629), created earl of Totnes (1626),
provincial president of Munster 1600–3. Carew arrived to assist his cousin Peter
Carew in the 1570s but afterwards entered government service, becoming master of the ordnance in 1588. Having left Ireland in 1592, he was reappointed after the
Nine Years War spread to Munster. He was a factional rival of the lord deputy—supporting Robert Cecil whereas
Mountjoy was a friend of
Essex. His mixture of brute force and skilful diplomacy quelled Munster within a year.
The Spanish landing at
Kinsale reignited war in Munster; Carew extinguished it by storming the O'Sullivan stronghold of Dunboy (June 1602). The early reduction of Munster enabled him to steal some of Mountjoy's thunder at court. As an acknowledged expert on Ireland, Carew inspected the
Ulster plantation (1610) and suggested new boroughs to create a Protestant majority in the 1613 parliament.
His considerable archive on Ireland (the Carew Manuscripts at Lambeth Palace) was exploited by his bastard son Thomas Stafford to write up the Munster campaign in
Pacata Hibernia (1633).
