Boycott, Capt. Charles Cunningham (1832–97). An English‐born former soldier appointed agent for Lord Erne's Co. Mayo estates in 1873, Boycott came into conflict with the
Land League at Lough Mask in 1880 and was the first prominent victim of Parnell's policy of consigning those who broke the league's code of conduct into ‘moral coventry’. He responded by drafting in Ulster
Orangemen to assist in farm work, but 1,000 troops were needed to protect them. The conflict made his name a synonym for social ostracism.
