Bord na Móna

Bord na Móna (‘The Turf Board’), founded in 1946 as a state‐owned company with a statutory responsibility to produce fuel from Irish peat bogs. It succeeded another state company, the Turf Development Board, which had been formed in 1935 as part of the policy of developing indigenous resources in order to achieve self‐sufficiency. Turf was an important source of domestic fuel, given the dearth of Irish coal supplies. Bord na Móna used modern machinery in place of traditional methods of harvesting turf and the company became a major employer throughout the midlands, where it built a number of planned villages. A substantial proportion of the company's output was sold to the Electricity Supply Board for generation purposes.
