‘Bloody Sunday’. The original ‘Bloody Sunday’ was a massacre of Russian protesters on 9 January 1905. Its first Irish namesake was 21 November 1920, when IRA men in Dublin killed thirteen men and injured six others, most, though not all, of whom were British intelligence agents. Later two arrested IRA leaders, Peadar Clancy and Richard McKee, were killed, along with another prisoner, supposedly while trying to escape. The same afternoon Auxiliaries dispatched to search for wanted men at a crowded Gaelic football match in Croke Park opened fire, possibly after coming under attack, killing twelve people. More recently the name has been applied to 30 January 1972, when paratroopers sent to make arrests following a banned civil rights march in Derry shot dead fourteen civilians. The rapid escalation of violence that followed helped precipitate direct rule in Northern Ireland.
