Belfast Natural History and Philosophical Society (Belfast Society), founded 1821 by the physician James Lawson Drummond (1783–1853) and seven friends. Membership expanded, drawing mostly on the commercial, industrial, medical, professional, and academic communities. In 1831 the society opened a museum and library in College Square. At meetings, members read papers on scientific subjects, history, and antiquities; papers were published in the society's
Proceedings. In 1910 the society transferred its collections to the developing municipal museum, but retained ownership of the building now the Old Museum Arts Centre. The Belfast Society (its present title) holds lectures, gives financial support to research and publications, and has about 140 members.
