Asquith, Herbert Henry (1852–1928), politician and barrister. As a Liberal, Asquith served as British home secretary (1892–5), chancellor of the exchequer (1905–8), and prime minister (1908–17). His interest in Irish affairs began whilst at Oxford. Speaking against coercion soon after entering parliament in 1886, he came to prominence as junior counsel for Parnell at the special commission (see ‘parnellism and crime’). In 1912 he introduced the third home rule bill. Visiting Ireland after the rising of 1916, he unsuccessfully advocated the immediate implementation of home rule. From 1920 he concentrated solely on Irish affairs in parliament, opposing partition and seeking dominion status for all Ireland. Asquith was in every way the natural political heir to Gladstone.
