Aberdeen, John Campbell Gordon, 7th earl of (1847–1934),
lord lieutenant of Ireland, 1886, 1905–15. Strongly influenced by his wife Ishbel, he sought to make the viceregal palace a centre for reconciliation and economic progress. Their contributions varied between the modestly effective, the harmless, and the risible. Not in the cabinet, Aberdeen was given no political role. The couple retired, reluctantly but to the delight of
Birrell, in February 1915. They published two volumes of memoirs,
We Twa (1925) and
More Cracks with ‘We Twa’ (1929).
