surface effect ship, the generic name for a ship operating on the boundary of air and water. The range includes hovercraft and hydrofoils as well as wave-piercing catamarans and SWATH ships which are designed to cut through waves instead of riding over them. Vessels which use the lift effect of water in close proximity to the hull are known as wing-in-surface effect ships. For illus.
