stringer, the name for what was called, in the early days of
shipbuilding, shelf-pieces, the fore-and-aft members of the structure of a ship's hull. There are
deck stringers to give added strength to each deck in a ship,
bilge stringers, and
hold stringers, each designed to strengthen the frames in these particular localities by holding them firm in the fore-and-aft line.
