strand. 1. A number of rope-yarns twisted together, ready to be
laid up into a rope with other strands. A rope is said to be
stranded when one of its strands is broken by too great a strain or worn too thin by chafing.
2. As a verb, it describes the state of a ship when it is driven ashore, or onto a
shoal, usually by bad weather.
