storm, a wind whose average speed lies between 48 and 63 knots, i.e. force 10 and 11 on the
Beaufort Scale. The two types of storm recognized depend on the wind speed, from 48 to 53 knots being known as a storm, and from 56 to 63 knots being known as a violent storm. Winds blowing above 63 knots are classed as hurricanes, or
tropical storms. As with a
gale, the state of the sea gives an indication of the strength of the storm. When the
waves are very high with long, overhanging crests, and the sea takes on a white appearance from the foam blown from them, a storm is in progress. In a violent storm the waves are so high that small and medium-sized ships are for a long time lost to view behind the waves, the sea is covered with long white patches of foam, the wave crests are blown into froth, and visibility is seriously affected by blown spray.
