sternwalk, a roofed platform built around the stern of some large ships, particularly warships, up to about 1914, when they were largely discarded. They connected with the main cabin and were fitted so that the admiral or captain could take the air without having to come on deck. They were the more modern version of the gallery of ancient sailing ships.
