spring tides, those tides, as opposed to neap tides, which rise highest and fall lowest from the mean tide level. They occur when the pull of the moon and of the sun act in conjunction whether 0° or 180° apart. These conditions occur twice in each lunar month, so that there are two spring tides and two neap tides every 29 days.
