slings, in general, the ropes or chains attached to any heavy article to hoist it. Boat slings are made of strong rope or wire with hooks and thimbles in the ends to hook into the stem, keel, and stern bolts so that boats may be hoisted into or out of a ship. Butt slings are used for hoisting casks, formed by passing a strop round the two ends of a cask and bringing the bight through the end of the strop. Yard slings are the ropes or chains which support a yard on the mast. For illus. see yard.
