rotating rig, where a yacht's mast or sails pivot to present the best aerodynamic shape to the apparent wind to improve the airflow and minimize turbulence. Rotating rigs were developed from the experiments of Dr Manfred Curry in Germany in the 1930s. The French racing catamaran Elf Aquitaine II used a rotating rig in the 1980s where the mast pivoted on a bearing under its heel. Another version is the Stollery Swing Rig which, instead of a boom, has a yard which pivots on the mast and extends both forward and aft of it. The loose-footed mainsail is set on the after part and the foresail, on its own boom, is set on the fore part.
