radio direction finder

radio direction finder, a navigational instrument, no longer in general use, by which the bearing of a radio beacon may be obtained and plotted on the chart. Initial experiments in radio direction finding took place early in the 20th century and the first ship to be fitted with a radio receiver designed to take bearings was the ocean liner Mauretania, in 1911. By the 1950s they were common aboard fishing vessels and even the smallest offshore yacht.
