quarter-cloths, strips of canvas, normally painted red, which were fixed on the outboard side of the nettings, extending from the quarter galleries to the gangways, in the sailing warships of most navies. Their purpose was to protect the hammocks, stowed by day in the nettings, from any seas breaking aboard. See also top-armours.
