purse seine net, used in commercial fisheries where the bottom can be drawn together after shooting to form a purse so that the fish enclosed in it cannot escape. It is a means of catching surface fish at sea in cases where a shoal of fish is visible or where they can be attracted into a small area by the use of powerful lights. The net is paid out around the shoal, from a fishing boat or sometimes from the sternsheets of a rowing boat, the warps from each end of the net being brought on board the fishing vessel. The bottom warps are then hauled in to close the purse seine underneath the shoal and, with the fish firmly enclosed, the whole net is hauled alongside and brought aboard, and the catch is deposited in the hold.
