prime meridian, the terrestrial meridian from which longitudes are measured eastwards or westwards, the longitude of the prime meridian being 0°. Early Mediterranean navigators used the meridian through the Fortunate Isles, or Canaries, as their first, or prime, meridian as they were then thought to be the westernmost part of the habitable globe. During the 15th and 16th centuries when the peoples of western Europe emerged as sea traders, almost every maritime nation used as a prime meridian a meridian passing through its own territory. The French, for example, used the meridian of Paris; the Dutch, that through Amsterdam; and the English the meridian through London. The inconvenience to navigators caused by the existence of a multitude of prime meridians, and so charts with differing meridians east and west, was not resolved until the closing decade of the 19th century when it was decided by international agreement to adopt the meridian of Greenwich as the prime meridian.
