pennant, sometimes written as pendant, but always pronounced pennant. It is a narrow tapering flag used for signalling or, as with a
commissioning pennant, for some particular purpose. There are ten numbered pennants, an answering pennant, and three substitute pennants in the
International Code of Signals.
