mercy ships, global charity founded in 1978 by an American couple, Don and Deyon Stephens, when they raised funds to convert the 159-metre (522-ft) Anastasis into the world's largest non-governmental hospital ship. Equipped with three operating theatres, a dental clinic, a laboratory, and an X-ray unit, and manned by both permanent and temporary staff, she has been used to help the peoples of many Third World countries in need of medical and dental assistance. She is currently (2004) off Sierra Leone. In 1994 she was joined by the 78-metre (256-ft) Caribbean Mercy which covers the Caribbean basin and Central America, and a third ship, the 152-metre (499-ft), Africa Mercy, was converted in 2004 from a rail ferry into a hospital ship with six operating theatres and an 80-bed ward.
