lifts, lines supporting the ends of the yards of square-riggers taken to the relevant masthead or the equivalent position in modern one-piece pole masts. Their principal purpose is to take the weight of the seamen working on the yard, but they are also used to keep the yard in equilibrium or to raise one end or the other (see cockbill).
