isogonic lines, lines drawn on a
chart which connects points of equal
variation of the
magnetic compass. The first world chart to incorporate isogonic lines was published in 1701 by Edmund Halley (1656–1742). Called a
General Chart of the Variations of the Compass, it was a notable landmark in the history and development of
chartmaking and
navigation.
