hermaphrodite brig

hermaphrodite brig, the generic term for those sailing ships which incorporated facets of the fore-and-aft rig into the square rig, principally the barque, barquentine, brigantine, and brig. The brig-schooner was also sometimes known by this name. This had two masts, the foremast being rigged as a brig and the mainmast as a schooner, with a square topsail set above a gaff mainsail. She differed from a brigantine by the square topsail set on the mainmast, brigantines being fore-and-aft-rigged on the main.
