hemp, the fibres of Cannabis sativa, originally native to central Asia. Its cultivation, first recorded in China around 2800 bc, had spread to the Mediterranean by early Christian times. Also known as white rope when new, it makes a hard, smooth rope, pale straw in colour, which has a good ability to stretch. In the days of sail it was usually tarred to preserve it against deterioration when it got wet, and was originally used for
hawsers, running
rigging, etc., but has now been replaced by synthetic rope.
