gripe, to, the tendency of a sailing vessel to come up into the wind when sailing close hauled, and requiring too much weather helm to correct this. It is sometimes an effect of the overall trim of the vessel and if so it can be reduced by lightening the vessel forward or trimming down aft to make its stern draw deeper into the water. More usually it is caused by an ill-balanced hull with too fat quarters. An unbalanced rig can also cause a vessel to gripe, which can be corrected by increasing the amount of sail forward.
