Copyright
foresail, generic name for the sails that are set on the forestays of a sailing vessel
forward of its foremost mast. However, a
big boy or
blooper, a light-weather foresail used by racing
yachts, is flown unattached to the
forestay and is often hoisted with, and on the opposite side to, a
spinnaker.
