fiddle block

fiddle block, a double block in which the two sheaves lie in one plane one below the other instead of being mounted on the same central pin as in more normal double blocks. The upper sheave is larger than the lower so that it vaguely resembles a violin in shape. They were used chiefly for the lower-yard tackles of square-rigged ships as they lay flatter to the yards.
