explosion vessel

explosion vessel, an ad hoc weapon at sea used for destroying or crippling objects with which it could be brought into contact. It was usually an old or obsolescent ship with its own means of propulsion, filled with explosive, and run alongside the object to be destroyed. The charge was exploded, either by slow match or by a time fuse, the crew making their escape by boat.
