dog watches

dog watches, the two half watches of two hours each into which the period from 1600 to 2000 hours is divided. The purpose of this is to produce an uneven number of watches in the 24 hours, seven instead of six, thereby ensuring that watchkeepers, whether organized in two or three watches, do not keep the same watches every day. The two half watches are known as the First Dog and the Last Dog, and never, except by landlubbers, as First Dog and Second Dog. How they came by these names is not known: they were certainly in use by the 17th century. One suggestion, that they were called dog watches because they were curtailed, though ingenious, does not appear to have any foundation in fact.
