compass rose

compass rose, a circular diagram displayed on the chart to facilitate measurement of direction. It is graduated in degrees from 0 at the reference direction to 360 and sometimes includes compass points as well. On relatively large-scale charts the magnetic compass rose is displayed, on British Admiralty charts usually in magenta, inside the rose aligned with true north. The date of the magnetic variation is always given and the rate of change. Mike Richey
