catharpings

catharpings, or catharpins.
1. Short ropes attached to the futtock shrouds under the tops in square-rigged vessels. They are used to brace in the shrouds more tightly and thus give space to brace the yards at a sharper angle to the fore-and-aft line when a square-rigged ship sails close hauled. For illus. see futtock shrouds.

2. The lashings used on yachts to prevent halyards frapping on the mast when moored up or at anchor, or in a marina.
