brigantine, a two-masted vessel
square rigged on the foremast and
fore-and-aft rigged on the mainmast. The name is thought to come from the sea brigands, particularly those operating in the Mediterranean, although the
Barbary pirates favoured oared
galleys. Brigantines are currently built for
sail training and include the 35-metre (115-ft)
Young Endeavour, in Australia, and the twin ships
Irving and
Exy Johnson, both 33.7 metres (110 ft) long, which were
launched in 2003 by the Los Angeles Maritime Institute.
