bow-chaser

bow-chaser, a long gun mounted forward in the bow-ports of sailing men-of-war and positioned to fire directly ahead. They were sometimes mounted in pairs and were always of small bore in relation to their length in order to carry their shot for a greater distance. They were used particularly when chasing an enemy ship, to attempt to slow it down by shooting away its sails and rigging.
