botter, originally a Dutch fishing boat normally based between Volendam and Harderwijk in what used to be the Zuider Zee. About 14 metres (45 ft) long and 4 metres (13 ft) in breadth, it was flat bottomed with curved sides and a high curved
stem and a low narrow stern. The
leeboards were long and narrow, sword shaped, for use in rough waters for offshore fishing. Fishing botters had a free flooding fishwell amidships for keeping the catch alive. Many botters were converted into
yachts, the large amount of space below decks providing comfortable and reasonably spacious accommodation, and many Dutch cruising yachts were also built on general botter lines.
