boathook. About the length of a broom handle, this has a two-pronged metal hook at the end, one prong larger than the other. A basic piece of equipment for all small vessels, such as
yachts,
launches, naval
pinnaces, it is used in a harbour,
marina, etc. to control a vessel coming alongside a
jetty, or another vessel, so as to avoid too heavy a contact. It can also be used to pick up
moorings or
fend off anything that might damage the vessel's hull.
