articles of agreement

articles of agreement, the condition of service signed by a seaman in the merchant marine when joining a ship which formed a legal contract with his employers. Normally they embodied provisions governing rates of pay, scale of victuals, daily hours of work, etc., and specified the extremes of latitude beyond which a seaman was not called upon to serve. Before the 1970s the master had the authority to punish members of the crew who transgressed the articles, but nowadays discipline aboard UK ships is covered by the Code of Conduct for the Merchant Navy, though the master can still dismiss any crew member for a serious transgression.
