answering pennant, a red and white vertically striped pennant hoisted when answering a flag signal at sea to indicate that it had been understood. Until the signal was fully understood, the answering pennant was hoisted at the dip, i.e. halfway up the signal halyards. The same pennant was used both in the naval signal code and in the International Code of Signals for merchant ships. In yacht racing it is a postponement signal.
