anchorage

anchorage, an area off the coast where the ground is suitable for ships to lie to an anchor, giving a good and secure holding. These areas are marked on a chart with the symbol of an anchor. In olden days it was also the name given to a royal duty levied on vessels coming to a port or roadstead for shelter.
